The Huntly 5G Project has delivered Scotland's first live customer connections using Tarana Wireless's next generation Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology.
Funded by the Aberdeen City Region Deal (ACRD) and delivered by the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society (SAOS), the pioneering project was deployed across rural areas surrounding Huntly, Aberdeenshire. The initiative was designed to demonstrate how high-speed broadband can be delivered quickly and reliably in locations where extending fibre networks can be difficult or uneconomical.
The network has been in development since January 2025, with the first domestic customers connected in June 2025.
Working in partnership with Aberdeen-based connectivity specialists Scot-Tel-Gould, the project provided an opportunity to test Tarana's technology in real-world rural environments.
Unlike many wireless systems, Tarana's technology is specifically designed to deliver fibre-like high-speed broadband over longer distances and in challenging conditions, including areas with difficult terrain, vegetation and limited infrastructure. The Huntly deployment demonstrated the technology's ability to provide reliable connectivity to rural homes and businesses and validated its potential as a scalable solution for hard-to-reach communities.
Reliable broadband is essential for modern life, work and business. From accessing online services and supporting remote working to enabling digital business systems and cloud-based applications, connectivity plays a vital role in rural communities.
For agricultural and rural businesses, access to reliable broadband also helps support the adoption of Agri-Tech, digital tools and data-driven systems that can improve efficiency, productivity and decision-making. Improved connectivity can help ensure businesses in rural locations are able to access the same opportunities and technologies as those in areas with more established broadband infrastructure.
